Researchers from the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) participated in the 1st South-East Transnational Congress of Microbial Sciences (SETCoMS 2026 & Mikromed Regio 6), held in Belgrade, Serbia, where they contributed to the scientific programme through oral presentations and poster sessions showcasing recent advances in microbial sciences.
Among the contributions, Dr. Aleš Lapanje presented “Microbial Ecosystem Engineering by Electrostatic Design”, highlighting innovative approaches for understanding and shaping microbial ecosystems to enhance their functionality and support environmental applications. His presentation demonstrated how microbial communities can be engineered to address complex challenges in environmental biotechnology.
In addition, Dmitrii Deev presented “Development of a Microfluidic Screening Approach for Isolation of Bacterial Consortia with Phytotoxicity-Reducing Activity Towards Olive Pomace Phenolics.” The presentation introduced a novel methodology for identifying beneficial bacterial consortia capable of reducing the phytotoxic effects of olive pomace phenolic compounds, contributing to the development of sustainable biotechnological solutions for environmental remediation and biomass valorisation.
Participation in SETCoMS 2026 provided an excellent opportunity for the JSI team to disseminate research results, exchange knowledge with experts from the international microbial sciences community, and strengthen scientific collaboration in areas closely related to the objectives of the BIOSYSMO Project.
