In the lead-up to World Soil Day on 5 December, ICCRAM at the University of Burgos is organising a dedicated “Soil Health Week” aimed at raising awareness about the vital role that healthy soils play in supporting ecosystems, food production, climate resilience, and future generations.
Throughout the week, ICCRAM is hosting a series of talks, workshops, and outreach activities designed to engage students, researchers, and the wider public in discussions around soil protection, sustainable land management, and innovative scientific approaches to soil restoration. The initiative highlights the importance of translating research knowledge into practical action and public understanding.
The programme is being developed in collaboration with several European research projects, including pHYBi, TRIBIOME, BIOSYSMO, POMATO, and BIOREM, all of which contribute complementary perspectives on soil health, bioremediation, microbiome-based solutions, and sustainable environmental practices. These collaborations underline the shared commitment to advancing soil science and promoting sustainable solutions at both local and European levels.
The week will conclude on Friday, 5 December, with the formal signing of the Soil Health Manifesto by the University of Burgos, the City Council of Burgos, and the Provincial Council of Burgos. This action represents a concrete commitment by local institutions to protect, restore, and sustainably manage soil resources, reinforcing the link between science, policy, and societal responsibility.
